It’s 2020, a New Year and hopefully, a chance at new beginnings. We’re talking about just that this January: Transformative Justice. We’ve lived in a carceral, punitive society for so long, it’s going to take a lot of work to build something new. A system that heals wrongs rather than punishes, imprisons, enslaves, locks away, and warps the marginalized.
Here’s the thing: there is no manual on how to build that system. To start, here are some pieces to draw from: Patrisse Cullors, Alex Press and Kai T. Erikson …and if you haven’t seen them yet, check out Steven Universe and The Good Place. Feel free to choose your own adventure here and pick one or two pieces to get familiar with the topic. Let that inspire you to find other examples and bring those ideas with you to the meeting.
See you Salon Sunday, January 26th.
The Desert Salon is not a class: it rejects the roles of teacher and student. The Desert Salon is radical: it rejects the divisions that the world makes between us based on skin, ableism, sex, gender, or class. Past meetings have discussed things as massive as the the Imperialist White-Supremacist Capitalist Heteropatriarchy and as local as water price changes. Being a radical is not a requirement, but you just might be inspired.
